When Direct Outreach Fails, Work Upstream or Downstream

Blog

You’ve got the right tech stack. You’ve got direct dials, mobile numbers, verified emails, even some LinkedIn interactions.

But your decision-maker won’t bite.

No matter how clean the data or how tight your cadence, some DMs are locked in their own world. They don’t reply. They don’t pick up. They don’t respond. It’s like shouting into the void.

At that point, most sales reps keep doing the same thing. More calls. More emails. More messages. They keep pounding the same spot hoping it eventually breaks open.

Here’s a better option: work the ladder. Or the trenches.

Let’s talk strategy. You have 3 plays when your DM goes cold:

Option 1: Keep pushing the same outbound sequence.

Sure, persistence matters. You may catch them at the right moment. But that’s banking on hope. And as we know, hope is not a strategy.

Option 2: Go higher. Engage the C-Suite.

This one takes guts. A lot of reps hesitate here. They assume the executive won’t respond, or that it’s “not their place.” Let me challenge that thinking.

C-level executives got to where they are by thinking big. They care about results, not roles. If what you’re selling can grow revenue, streamline operations, or create efficiency, you’re not wasting their time—you’re giving them an opportunity.

And sometimes, all it takes is one well-positioned conversation with the right executive to break the logjam below.

Option 3: Go lower. Build influence on the ground.

If the top feels out of reach, don’t overlook the power of the people around the DM. Project managers. Analysts. Department leads. These folks are often closer to the problem your solution solves.

And here’s the kicker: they usually have the DM’s trust, their attention, and their calendar access. If you can get them genuinely excited, if you show how your offering makes their day-to-day easier, they can become champions.

But make no mistake. You don’t send them upstream alone. You go with them. You partner. You guide. You co-architect the conversation. You equip them with the right narrative, and you stay close as momentum builds inside the account.

Influencer relationships are not about delegation. They’re about collaboration. When you align with the people who live the problem, you earn the right to solve it alongside them, and eventually, above them.

Real Talk: Why Most Reps Don’t Do This

Fear. That’s the truth.

Fear of rejection from an executive. Fear of wasting time with a non-decision maker. Fear of messing up the account by “going around” someone.

But let me flip the script. What if fear is exactly what’s keeping you average?

Elite sales pros don’t freeze when Plan A doesn’t work. They adapt. They look for leverage points. They test angles, build internal allies, and climb organizational ladders.

They stop making excuses and start making progress.

So ask yourself…

  • Who else in the org has a vested interest in what I offer?
  • Who reports to, or influences, my DM?
  • Who would benefit directly from the outcomes we deliver?

Answer those questions, and you’ll stop chasing unresponsive prospects and start building pipeline that actually moves.

Are you still stuck on that one DM who won’t pick up?

It’s time to move. Up or down.
